Princess Zainab J. Ado Bayero, daughter of the late Emir of Kano, HRH Alhaji Ado Bayero, has voiced serious concerns over an alleged incident involving her family at a Lagos hotel. Speaking to Vanguard, the filmmaker and outspoken feminist revealed that her mother and brother, Ahmed Tijjani Ado Bayero, were allegedly held at the hotel due to unresolved financial disputes.
According to Zainab, the incident, which occurred on December 8, 2024, reflects a deeper struggle her family has faced since the passing of her father. In an emotional statement, she described the ordeal as a harsh consequence of societal marginalization, rooted in tribalism and patriarchal attitudes.
“For a day, we were held hostage over a hotel debt because we have no home,” she shared. “My brother is depressed, and we feel abandoned. This isn’t just about us—it’s about the systemic injustices faced by individuals like me who challenge societal expectations.”
Zainab further highlighted the unique challenges of her mixed heritage, explaining how her family’s situation reflects broader societal dynamics. She alleged marginalization from certain factions within the Kano emirate and called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take action.
“Mr. President, it is your duty to protect the rights of every Nigerian, including my family. We are being judged for our mixed heritage and for speaking out against societal norms. This is not just a personal crisis—it’s a national concern,” she stated.
The princess also appealed to the Governor of Kano State, a relative, to step in and address their plight. “As the leader of our people, I believe he has the wisdom and compassion to hear our side of the story and mediate a resolution,” she said.
This incident sheds light on complex issues surrounding gender, heritage, and social justice in Nigeria, amplifying calls for systemic change and greater accountability in addressing the rights of marginalized citizens.
