Sterling Bank Faces Allegations Of Money Laundering And Financial Misconduct In House Committee Hearing

Published:

Sterling Bank Plc has been implicated in allegations of money laundering, fraudulent deductions, and other financial crimes by its staff members, as detailed in a report presented to the House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions. The report emerged during a hearing on a petition filed by Maiden Systems Ltd against Sterling Bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Shell Petroleum Development Company.

Maiden Systems Ltd lodged a formal complaint with the House Committee, alleging mismanagement, unauthorized debits, and misappropriation of funds from its accounts held at Sterling Bank. The company contended that significant sums were illicitly withdrawn and that the bank failed to provide necessary account statements, hindering transparency.

Representatives from the Inspector General of Police, Chief Inspectors Kabiru Yahaya and Sunny Amison, presented the investigative report to the committee. Their investigation revealed several concerning issues:

Non-Issuance of Account Statements: Maiden Systems Ltd claimed it was denied access to its account statements. The assigned account officer asserted that statements were provided electronically or via SMS; however, no evidence was presented to substantiate this claim.

Unauthorized Debits and Misappropriation: The investigation uncovered multiple unauthorized debits from Maiden Systems Ltd’s accounts. Notably, substantial amounts were withdrawn under the guise of loan repayments without adequate explanation or documentation.

Loan Repayment Discrepancies: A significant debit of approximately $28.3 million was noted for loan repayment purposes. The bank’s records lacked clarity on the nature of these transactions, and there were inconsistencies in the reported outstanding loan balances.

Committee Chairman Mike Etaba assured all parties that the report would be thoroughly reviewed to ensure justice is served. He emphasized the committee’s commitment to an impartial examination of the findings and to holding accountable those responsible for any financial misconduct.

These allegations come amid heightened scrutiny of financial institutions in Nigeria. Sterling Bank has previously faced challenges related to internal fraud. In a separate incident, the bank was involved in a case where staff members and external collaborators were arraigned for allegedly hacking into the bank’s system and stealing over ₦1.2 billion from depositors’ accounts.

The current allegations, combined with past incidents, raise concerns about the effectiveness of Sterling Bank’s internal controls and compliance mechanisms. The outcomes of the committee’s review and any subsequent legal actions will be closely monitored by stakeholders in the financial sector.

As the situation develops, it underscores the critical importance of robust internal controls, transparency, and accountability within financial institutions to maintain public trust and ensure the integrity of the banking system.
