Published:

A 17-year-old student, identified as Taiwo, tragically lost his life on Tuesday morning when he was struck by a stray bullet fired by a police officer during a traffic enforcement operation in Ibadan, Oyo State. Taiwo was en route to his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) center, accompanied by his father and twin brother, when the incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road in the Egbeda Local Government Area .

According to eyewitness accounts, the police were conducting a joint operation with the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) to curb one-way traffic violations, which had been a persistent issue in the area. During the operation, Taiwo’s father was reportedly driving against traffic in a black Honda Accord with registration number FST 639 JU. In an attempt to stop the vehicle, a police officer aimed to shoot at the car’s tires but missed, and the bullet struck Taiwo, who was seated in the back seat with his brother

Taiwo was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital in Alakia and later transferred to the University College Hospital (UCH), but he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident sparked outrage among local residents and the broader Nigerian community. Protesters, including market traders and sympathizers, carried Taiwo’s body to the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, demanding justice and accountability for the tragic loss. The demonstration led to heightened security measures around the secretariat as tensions escalated.

In response to the incident, the Oyo State Government expressed deep condolences to Taiwo’s family, describing the event as “sad, shocking, and painful.” The government emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided and announced that the police officer involved is currently under investigation by the state police command. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while the investigation proceeds and have reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed that a comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They have assured the public that any officer found culpable will face appropriate disciplinary and legal actions.

This incident has reignited discussions about police conduct and the use of firearms during traffic enforcement operations in Nigeria. Civil society organizations and concerned citizens are calling for reforms to ensure that law enforcement actions do not endanger innocent lives, particularly those of young students pursuing their education.

As the community mourns the loss of a promising young student, there is a collective call for justice, accountability, and systemic changes to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
