Lilian Afegbai Expresses Shock Over $1,200 Aso-Ebi Price Tag At Lagos Wedding

Published:

Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has recently voiced her astonishment upon being asked to purchase aso-ebi—the traditional attire worn by guests at Nigerian ceremonies—for a staggering $1,200 to attend a friend’s wedding in Lagos. This revelation has ignited widespread discussions on social media regarding the escalating costs associated with attending such events.

Afegbai shared her experience in a video posted on Instagram, where she recounted her disbelief upon discovering the price. Initially, she assumed the amount was in Nigerian Naira, only to realize it was quoted in US dollars. She expressed her frustration, questioning the rationale behind spending such a significant sum on an outfit likely to be worn just once.

The actress’s candid remarks have sparked a broader conversation about the financial demands placed on guests attending Nigerian weddings. Traditionally, purchasing aso-ebi is a sign of solidarity and support for the celebrants. However, the increasing costs have led many to question the sustainability of this practice. According to the Owanbe Community, the expenses associated with being an aso-ebi guest can be substantial, encompassing not only the attire but also accessories, styling, and sometimes travel and accommodation.

This incident is not the first time Afegbai has addressed the financial implications of aso-ebi. In June 2023, she humorously called out comedian Anita Asuoha, popularly known as Real Warri Pikin, regarding the cost of aso-ebi for her wedding. Afegbai’s light-hearted complaint highlighted the pressure felt by some guests to meet the financial expectations associated with such events.

The discourse surrounding the cost of aso-ebi reflects a growing awareness of the financial strain that elaborate ceremonies can impose on attendees. As conversations continue, there is a call for more considerate and inclusive practices that allow all well-wishers to partake in celebrations without undue financial burden.
