Nigeria Enters New Era of Taxation As FIRS E-Invoicing Goes Live

Published:

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has ushered in a new age of tax administration with the official launch of its electronic invoicing system, marking a bold leap into digital compliance. Since going live on August 1, 2025, this innovative Merchant-Buyer Model has already seen over 1,000 large corporations—including trailblazers like MTN Nigeria—embrace the platform, transmitting live invoices in a seamless digital handshake with the tax authority.

The system, which promises to make tax compliance faster, more transparent, and less cumbersome, represents more than just a technological upgrade—it’s a fundamental shift in how Nigeria tracks and verifies commercial transactions. With MTN leading the charge as the first fully integrated taxpayer, followed closely by Huawei and IHS Nigeria, the FIRS has demonstrated the system’s viability while acknowledging early adoption challenges. In a move that balances firm policy with pragmatic flexibility, the agency has extended the onboarding deadline for large taxpayers by three months, giving companies until November 1 to complete integration.

Developed in collaboration with NITDA, the e-invoicing solution deploys a network of service providers as both system integrators and access points, creating an ecosystem designed to support businesses through workshops, webinars, and town hall meetings. As Nigeria joins the ranks of nations implementing real-time fiscal visibility, this digital transformation not only combats tax evasion but also positions the country’s revenue infrastructure for the demands of a 21st-century economy—one invoice at a time.
