Anthony Joshua’s Driver Arrested, Detained Over Fatal Lagos–Ibadan Expressway Crash

Published:

The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident that claimed the lives of two associates of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has been arrested and detained by the police.

The crash occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, resulting in the deaths of Joshua’s personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.

The driver, 47-year-old Kayode Adeniyi, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus SUV transporting Joshua and his team, has been taken into custody at the Eleweeran Police Station in Ogun State. He faces a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter and has provided his account of the incident during interrogation.

Confirming the arrest, Oluseyi Babaseyi, Police Public Relations Officer for the Ogun State Command, stated on social media platform X:

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing.”

Preliminary findings by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, factors the agency identified as leading causes of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.

The accident involved five adult males—two fatalities, one injured (Joshua), and two others unhurt.

Anthony Joshua survived the crash and was treated at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, before being discharged on Wednesday night after being declared clinically fit to continue recovery at home. Meanwhile, the bodies of his deceased friends have been flown out of Nigeria.

The case remains under active investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and prepare for legal proceedings.
