Tiktoker Seaking Arraigned In Court Over Alleged Cyberstalking, Treason, And Calls For Violence Against Police

Published:

Olumide Ogunsanwo, popularly known as Seaking, was arraigned before a magistrate court on Monday morning, December 23, following accusations of serious criminal offenses.

According to human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, who represented Seaking in court, the Tiktoker was charged by the police on multiple counts, including treason, cyberstalking, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and provoking unrest. The charges stemmed from Seaking’s alleged call for Nigerian youths to “wage war” against law enforcement.

Effiong stated, “Seaking was charged with treason, cyberstalking, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and provocation of unrest. These charges are connected to a video he posted, where he made controversial comments that some interpreted as calls for violence against the police.”

During the court proceedings, Effiong revealed that the court granted Seaking bail under liberal terms. The bail was set at N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a family member, and both must be residents of Lagos State and gainfully employed.

“The bail terms were fair, considering the gravity of the charges,” Effiong added. “The case has been adjourned to January 16, 2025, for the report of the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) advice.”

Effiong highlighted that the charges were largely influenced by a video Seaking posted online, where he allegedly made remarks perceived as inflammatory and provocative towards law enforcement. The video has since sparked significant public and legal attention, contributing to the legal action against him.

“As part of the investigation, the video in question played a major role in forming the basis of these charges,” Effiong explained. “Whether or not Seaking intended the comments to be interpreted as a call for violence, the courts will determine that during the course of the trial.”

Seaking’s arraignment has sparked a wave of public debate about freedom of expression and the limits of online speech in Nigeria. The case has been adjourned to allow the DPP to provide advice, which will further guide the legal proceedings.

In the meantime, Seaking remains under the watchful eye of both the legal system and the public, with discussions continuing about the implications of his charges.
