Inspector-General Of Police Visits Kwara Over Alleged Police-Custody Death, Promises Justice

Published:

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, paid a condolence visit to Ilorin, Kwara State, on Sunday, December 22, following the controversial death of 35-year-old Jimoh Abdulquadri, who reportedly died in police custody under suspicious circumstances.

Jimoh, a resident of the Balogun Fulani community in Erubu, was arrested on December 19, 2024, after being accused of owing a colleague, identified as Peter, the sum of N220,000 at Olam Farms in Offa. His sudden demise in custody has sparked outrage and concerns over possible police misconduct.

During his visit, IGP Egbetokun met with the traditional ruler of the Balogun Fulani community, urging calm and patience among residents, particularly the youth, as investigations proceed. He emphasized that the circumstances surrounding Jimoh’s death would be thoroughly examined and assured that justice would be served.

“I am deeply saddened to be here under such tragic circumstances,” Egbetokun stated. “The death of Jimoh Abdulquadri is very concerning, and I want to assure you all that this matter will not be swept under the carpet. Justice must be served.”

The IGP disclosed that he had already directed the Kwara State Commissioner of Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the case. He further assured the community that the findings of the inquiry would be made public, reinforcing the police’s commitment to transparency and accountability.

“I have given clear instructions for a meticulous investigation. Let us not rush to conclusions; the investigative committee will ensure all facts are uncovered and justice is delivered,” Egbetokun added.

Acknowledging his deep connection with Ilorin, the IGP expressed gratitude for the warmth and prayers he received during his prior posting to the state in 2020.

Residents of Balogun Fulani have been urged to maintain peace and avoid taking the law into their own hands. The police chief reiterated his dedication to resolving the issue with integrity, ensuring that the tragic incident does not undermine public trust in law enforcement.

This visit comes amidst growing concerns about police brutality and the need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s justice system. The case of Jimoh Abdulquadri is expected to serve as a litmus test for the police’s ability to uphold justice and restore public confidence.
