In a significant crackdown on human trafficking, the Lagos State Police Command has apprehended three individuals accused of operating a notorious baby factory in the Ijegun area of Lagos. The suspects, identified as Mariam Vincent, 35; Orie Ruth, 23; and Ujunwa Ifeanyi, 18, allegedly lured women from various regions under false pretenses, coercing them into pregnancies to produce infants for illegal sale.
Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives raided the illicit facility on April 5, 2025, rescuing 11 victims held captive. Among those freed were seven women—Precious (24), Magdalene (25), Adaobi (23), Princess (22), Ifeanyi (25), and Amaka (26)—and three children: Destiny, a 7-year-old boy; Miracle, a 5-year-old girl; and Success, a 2-year-old girl. These individuals were reportedly subjected to inhumane conditions, forced to engage with men arranged by the operators to become pregnant.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests and the rescue operation. He stated that the victims are currently receiving appropriate care and support. The suspects allegedly confessed to abducting their victims from different parts of the state to run the baby factory. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will face charges under the state’s criminal laws upon conclusion.
This incident underscores a troubling trend of baby factories in Nigeria, where women are exploited for child trafficking. Similar operations have been uncovered in the past, highlighting the pervasive nature of this illicit trade.
