On the occasion of World Cancer Day, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, delivered a powerful message emphasizing that every individual, regardless of their socio-economic background, deserves access to a healthy life—free from the devastating impact of cancer.
In her statement, the First Lady acknowledged the profound burden cancer places on millions of people and families around the world, particularly in Nigeria, where it remains one of the leading causes of death. This recognition comes at a crucial time when global health experts continue to call for stronger, united efforts to combat the disease.
“As we observe World Cancer Day today, we are reminded of the burden cancer places on millions of individuals and families in Nigeria, and around the globe,” she stated. “This year’s theme, ‘United by Unique,’ underscores the importance of tailoring cancer treatments to meet the unique needs of every individual. This approach can ensure that no one is left behind in the fight against cancer.”
She expressed her optimism that with unwavering determination and collaborative efforts, the narrative surrounding cancer can be changed, particularly in a country like Nigeria where access to healthcare can often be a challenge. Her message of hope highlighted the need to focus on vital areas such as awareness, screening, early detection, and ensuring that treatment is accessible to all, regardless of financial status or geographic location.
“Cancer remains a leading cause of death in Nigeria, but with the right partnerships and collective responsibility, we can change this narrative,” she added. “Every individual deserves the opportunity to live a healthy life, free from the devastating impact of cancer.”
The First Lady called on all Nigerians to prioritize their health and to support one another in the fight against this disease. By continuing to raise awareness, promoting regular screening, and advocating for equitable access to care, she believes that the nation can make significant strides in addressing the cancer crisis.
Her message serves as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility that lies with each of us in ensuring a healthier future for all.
