An Allied Air Cargo aircraft experienced a tyre burst upon landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, on Wednesday, resulting in the plane skidding off Runway 22 and temporarily disrupting airport operations.
The incident, which occurred at 10:05 AM on December 11, 2024, has led to the suspension of flight activities as authorities work to safely remove the immobilized aircraft.
Fortunately, all five individuals aboard the aircraft were safely evacuated without injuries and were subsequently taken to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) clinic for evaluation. Emergency personnel responded swiftly, ensuring the safety of passengers and crew members.
FAAN, in a statement by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, confirmed the incident and highlighted ongoing efforts to address the situation.
“The Airport Emergency Response team, alongside accident investigators, is on-site. Operations are focused on reopening the runway as quickly as possible,” the statement noted.
The closure of the runway has caused significant disruptions to flight schedules, with numerous departures delayed. Passengers are advised to remain in close contact with their airlines for real-time updates and further guidance.
A source at NAIA informed Daily Trust that operations are progressing at the site, with authorities prioritizing a swift resolution to minimize inconvenience.
FAAN has assured the public that the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. The agency urged patience and refrained from speculation until a preliminary report is released.
FAAN expressed gratitude to the aviation community and the general public for their understanding and cooperation during this period. The runway is expected to reopen shortly, restoring normal airport operations.
