In a significant ceremony held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State officially presented the staff of office to Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, inaugurating him as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. This event marks the commencement of Oba Owoade’s reign, following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III nearly three years prior.
The selection process leading to Oba Owoade’s appointment was marked by rigorous scrutiny and public interest. Governor Makinde emphasized his administration’s commitment to transparency, stating that he deliberately refrained from influencing the selection to maintain the integrity of the process. He remarked, “I met Prince Owoade for the first time in my life yesterday. I never spoke to him in my entire life until yesterday.”
Addressing the significance of the Alaafin’s stool, Governor Makinde noted its importance beyond Oyo town, extending to the entire Yoruba race. He reiterated his stance against politicizing traditional institutions, asserting that decisions regarding such appointments should transcend political affiliations. “Why should my decision be based on political consideration? So, I approved the selection of the Saki kingmakers,” he stated.
The governor also issued a stern warning to individuals attempting to destabilize the traditional institution in Oyo, indicating that the government would prosecute those found culpable. He suggested that forgiveness from the new Alaafin could influence the government’s stance on such matters.
In his inaugural address, Oba Owoade expressed gratitude to the governor, the Oyomesi (kingmakers), and all who facilitated his selection. He pledged to work towards the progress of Oyo Town, Oyo State, and the Yoruba race globally. “I pray that your reign shall bring unity to the Yoruba race wherever they may be around the world,” Governor Makinde added in his congratulatory message.
The ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, and other key government officials. Traditional rulers and members of the Oyomesi were also present, underscoring the event’s cultural and political significance.
The coronation ceremony is scheduled to take place in four weeks, officially commencing Oba Owoade’s reign as the Alaafin of Oyo. His ascension is anticipated to usher in a new era of unity and development for the people of Oyo and the broader Yoruba community.
