SURULERE, LAGOS – Residents of Surulere were left shaken after a late-night shooting claimed the life of a man identified as a suspected cult figure in the area, heightening concerns about the resurgence of cult-related violence in Lagos communities.
DASCENARIO reports that the victim, Adedipe Adeyinkan , popularly known as Yinka Agali , was reportedly killed on Saturday night in the Iponri axis of Lagos – a bustling neighbourhood where residents live and move daily.
Many in the community described the incident as deeply disturbing, particularly because it occurred in a busy area with significant foot and vehicular traffic.
How the Surulere Shooting Unfolded
According to reports gathered by DASCENARIO, the attack occurred while the victim was driving. Gunmen opened fire on his vehicle before fleeing the scene, leaving the community in shock.
While some accounts suggest the killing may be linked to ongoing rivalry between cult groups , others believe it could be connected to rising political tensions ahead of local elections in Lagos State.
The Iponri axis, where the incident took place, is known as a residential and commercial hub within Surulere. The brazen nature of the attack has raised alarms about the audacity of armed groups operating in the area.
Police Confirm Incident, Launch Investigation
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command said officers responded to a distress call around 11:30 p.m. near the National Stadium Bridge towards Iponri.
Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi , explained that the victim was found inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds and was rushed to Mainland General Hospital in Yaba , where he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.
“Our officers responded swiftly to the distress call. The victim was evacuated to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries,” Adebisi stated.
She added that the attackers abandoned one of their vehicles at the scene before escaping in another. Both vehicles have since been recovered by the police, while investigations are ongoing to track down those responsible for the killing.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, but residents and security sources have floated two primary theories:

For residents of Surulere and the Iponri axis, the incident has raised fresh concerns about safety and the lingering threat of cult-related violence within communities.
“We are afraid. This happened in a place where people live, where children play, where businesses operate. If gunmen can strike like this and escape, what does that mean for our safety?” one resident, who pleaded anonymity, told DASCENARIO.
Many are calling on the Lagos State Government and the police command to deploy stronger security presence and proactive measures to prevent further violence.
Separate Incident: Job Seekers Robbed in Magodo
In a separate development, the police also confirmed a case involving the robbery of job seekers in the Magodo area, where unsuspecting individuals were lured with fake job interviews.
According to police sources, the suspects advertised non-existent job vacancies online, inviting victims to a location where they were robbed of their valuables.
“We urge members of the public to remain vigilant, especially when responding to job offers online. Always verify the authenticity of such offers before attending any meeting,” the police spokesperson advised.
