The first hours of 2026 turned tragic on the Lekki–Epe Expressway when a truck driver lost his life in a hit-and-run accident near Shangotedo inward Eleko.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the incident occurred in the early morning of January 1, 2026, after a fully-laden 40-foot containerized truck with registration T-7740-LA overturned on the busy expressway.
Preliminary reports indicate the articulated truck lost balance and capsized, obstructing the road. LASTMA’s 24-hour Night Gang, which was monitoring the corridor, responded swiftly to secure the scene and prevent further accidents.
While attempting to place a “C” caution sign to alert oncoming vehicles, the truck driver was struck by a speeding vehicle whose driver immediately fled the scene.
The impact resulted in fatal injuries, and the truck driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
LASTMA officials evacuated the victim’s body and handed it over to the Elemoro Police Station for further investigation. A manhunt has been launched to apprehend the hit-and-run motorist.
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, LASTMA’s General Manager, visited the site and described the incident as “preventable yet deeply saddening.” He extended condolences to the victim’s family and warned against excessive speed and negligence, urging all motorists to obey traffic rules, respect speed limits, and prioritize safety—especially in emergencies.
