Egor Council Chair And Deputy Impeached Over Allegations Of Misconduct And Financial Mismanagement

Published:

In a significant political shakeup, Eghe Ogbemudia, Chairman of Egor Local Government Council, and her deputy, Frank Osawe, have been impeached by the council’s legislative arm. The decision, announced on Friday, follows accusations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation.

Key Officers Suspended

The council’s legislative arm also suspended three principal officers: Majority Leader Hon. Bosede Omokaro, Deputy Majority Leader Hon. Iwinosa Enabulele, and Chief Whip Hon. Elliot Inneh Enni.

The impeachment motion, citing four major allegations, was introduced by Hon. Nosakhare Isiegbuwa and seconded by Hon. Stella Ogida Osagioduwa. The motion was supported by signatures from four legislators.

Charges and Allegations

Among the allegations were:

  • Unlawful withholding of statutory allowances: This involved unpaid entitlements owed to a principal officer and three council members.
  • Budget padding and financial mismanagement: Accusations of manipulating council budgets for personal gain.

Suspended principal officers were further criticized for failing to ensure timely salary payments, leading to a two-month delay for councilors. They were also accused of neglecting oversight duties and failing to cooperate with council leadership.

Legislative Actions

Five council members voted in favor of the impeachment and suspensions, with one member absent. Following the suspension of the principal officers, Hon. Kelvin Eguakun was elected as the new Leader of the legislative arm.

During the proceedings, Hon. Isiegbuwa presented the findings of a seven-member investigative panel, which concluded that Ogbemudia and Osawe were guilty of all charges. The findings prompted a unanimous voice vote that finalized their removal from office.

Political Repercussions

The impeachment marks a dramatic turn in Egor Local Government’s leadership, signaling the legislative arm’s commitment to addressing allegations of corruption and inefficiency. The council has yet to announce interim replacements for the impeached chairman and her deputy.
